I have a pretty huge crush on this book. It’s gorgeous; full page photos of delicately arranged flowers and brilliantly colored powders give me pestle and mortar envy. It’s a very detailed guide filled with rituals for making your own beauty supplies from all-natural ingredients. The book includes recipes for lotions, oil rollers, cosmetics, make-up removers and dyes. Not just for those who lightly dabble in the all-natural, this book is a researchers’ paradise; there are resource lists, notes, and glossaries for days.
I am not naturally an all-natural kind of girl. I still buy my make-up from the corner drug store so I can purchase toilet paper and a Snickers at the same time. Multi-tasking is my high.
But it’s books like Plant-Powered Beauty that make me pause and reflect on the things I put on my body, and how dismissive I am of the reflective processes of self-care. Good stuff comes from bring conscious and intentional with our everyday choices, and good stuff comes from the earth. Combining these two self-evident truths shouldn’t be too difficult, am I right?
Here’s how I dipped my foot into the Plant-Powered Beauty how-to: oils.
If you think oils are just the latest in homeopathic voodoo, good for you for being cynical. I love being cynical, it’s my favorite thing since multi-tasking. But somehow, for some reason beyond me, this stuff seems to work. Some of it I associate with placebo effect, but I’ve got a lot of oils that topically numb way better than good old-fashioned bengay.
I get migraines like my own brain is trying to self-destruct. Instead of pushing the eject button, let’s try making our very own Plant-Powered Beauty cocktail for migraines: achy head elixir.
- Carrier Oil (I used Young Living’s V6 Vegetable Oil complex)
- Peppermint (5 drops)
- Lavender (35 drops)
- Rosemary (15 drops)
- Eucalyptus (5 drops)
- One roll-on bottle like these ones sold on amazon in cute colors.
In the gallery below are some snapshots from the digital copy of Plant-Powered Beauty, with highlighted selections by yours truly. The authors suggest creating synergies, or oil combinations, before adding them to the carrier oil.
What I did instead was create the whole elixir in the roller bottle. You can use a plastic roller-bottle opener or a credit card to pry open the roller ball lid. Then drop your oil ingredients into the roller bottle, drop by drop.
The combination of all those oils will take up about half your bottle. The rest you fill up with carrier oil. Then you snap your lid back on and shake shake shake. Ta-da! Your very own homemade headache remedy.
Does it work?
Since I created this concoction I’ve had multiple migraines. On one such devastating migraine occasion, I took just one Excedrin migraine and I rolled the head-ache roll-on over my temples, under my ear, and on the back of my neck. I rubbed it in a little bit because the carrier oil is really slick, then I lay down in bed with the curtains drawn and prayed for death.
Death never came, but what did was a swifter recovery than I’m used to having with migraines. In about twenty minutes I felt better; I was well enough to move about the room. I reapplied the roll-on at this point. In an hour, I was feeling almost 100 percent. Miracles. Usually my migraines last for lifetimes. The roll-on cut my misery in half.
Next time I have a headache, I’m going to attempt nixing the Excedrin altogether and see if the roll-on will work on its own. Am I enthused to be having migraines in order to test this how-to? Not exactly—but it’s proof to my cynical body that some voodoo actually works.
